On Deck for 2025: We’re Goin’ Down… Down Under That Is

Plans, routes, reservations and itineraries are in place for our next bike tour where we’ll explore New Zealand, top to bottom, on bicycles!

Click here to find out more about the route. Although we’ve worked through most of the questions we had in planning the tour (Ok, well mostly Tom did all that), we still have one big question. And maybe you have an answer.

After New Zealand, we’re heading over to Australia for a few days. I mean, it’s in the neib and it’s doubtful we will return since there’s Europe, Asia, South America and other places to explore on bikes

If you’ve been to Australia, what should we be sure to do when we visit?

  1. Love this trip for you! Been to most of the east coast of Australia – the Gold Coast (stunning beaches and the Steve and Terri Irwin wildlife sanctuary), Sydnee (my favorite of the 3 places as far as walkability, spending time near the harbor, and just the area itself), and Melbourne (it’s a huge city – too big for me, BUUUUUT, there is an AMAZING bus tour of the coast and you will see some of the most breathtaking scenery there.). If you do go toward the north side, take the time to go to the Great Barrier Reef – sadly it is dying and may not exist at some point, so you can get there before it’s gone.

    Things to know:

Do NOT say “fanny” as in “fanny pack.” That is one of the words that makes people very uncomfortable……. think the most offensive lady bodypart word. (Yes, I found that out after yelling it to someone in a store and received some very upset looks from folks!) They use the term “bum bag” or “bum” instead

If you get out of the city, there are a lot of folks who haven’t traveled – and may not have ever seen American money. That was kind of fun to share some of my change (and a few dollar bills!) with them.

Have a wonderful trip if I don’t see you before! Still hoping to have dinner with you two!

    1. OMGosh on the department store “fanny” comment. That’s very good to know. Oh dear, I wonder if there are other taboo terms.

We will def be hanging in Sydney. Just looked at a map and it looks like the GBR and Melbourne are opposite directions of each other so we will probs need to pick just one. Hummmm… lots to think about. We are very excited about the trip not only for the spectacular views but also meeting the people along the way.

Sending big hugs to you and Steve. And btw, you are living retirement well. Thanks for reaching out. :)
